In the spring of 1844, the Wells family receives a letter from a distant relative, the wealthy landowner Nicholas Van Ryn. He has invited one of their daughters for an extended visit at his Hudson Valley estate, Dragonwyck.

Eighteen-year-old Miranda, bored with her local suitors and commonplace life on the farm, leaps at the chance for escape. She immediately falls under the spell of the master and his mansion, mesmerized by the Gothic towers, flowering gardens, and luxurious lifestyle—unaware of the dark, terrible secrets that await.

Seton's engaging gothic romance follows Miranda Wells as she makes the leap from stifling life on a farm to what she imagines will be a much more lively and fulfilling life with her wealthy distant cousin, Nicholas Van Ryn. As an older book (originally published in 1944), the beats of this audiobook are not always those expected by a contemporary listener, so a truly committed narrator is needed to showcase what it is that has managed to stand the test of time. Hillary Huber's solid but, ultimately, uninspired performance keeps this audiobook from reaching its full potential. J.L.K. © AudioFile 2015, Portland, Maine

When Miranda Wells is summoned by her distant cousin Nicholas Van Ryn to live with his family at his luxurious residence in Hudson, New York, she thinks her dreams of romance will come true. The land of the Dutch settlers is not home to narrator Bonnie Hurren, and she gives acceptable, if not colloquial, pronunciation to the names of the many towns in the area. Otherwise, her entire reading is masterful--offering extremely exact characters. This control gives the Gothic novel all the shades of eeriness the author means us to hear. J.P.
